Regardless of your fitness for hiking, you can still enjoy magnificent views on surrounding mountains, the city of Maribor or on surrounding hills, which are covered in woods or vineyards, and on the valleys among them.
From Maribor, you can take a cable car to the upper station. A short walk from there brings you to the viewing tower. If you bravely climb it to the top, you can enjoy beautiful view to the hills in the Austrian part of Styria.
Up to Kalvarija you can climb 445 stone steps or you can walk on less steep paths and admire the way the city reveals itself. On top, you can visit a church.
From Maribor City Park, a short sand/macadam road leads through the vineyards up to the chapel on top of Piramida hill/Pyramid hill. The reward for the undemanding ascend is the view over the city, to Pohorje hill on the other side of the valley and to the further surroundings. If you wish, you can continue the path on the crest and pass the Three Ponds on the way back to the City Park.
The hill on the other side of the valley that leads towards Austria also offers a nice view on Maribor from another perspective. At the top, there is a cross that was set there at the fifth anniversary of independence.
Another hill that especially stands out is a low hill Pekrska gorca with a church on top. You can walk to the top on macadam road/path or through woods on Way of the Cross pass chapels. On top, you can relax on the benches and enjoy the view on Pohorje ski slope from up close.
By the road from Bresternica towards Gaj nad Mariborom, a marked hiking path through the woods and fields towards the Žavcar top starts. At a hut Koča na Žavcarjevem vrhu quite a lot of hikers gather especially at the weekends. You can refresh with drinks and food there, sit on one of the benches and look over the valley to Pohorje hill.
HINT: Žavcarjev vrh is one of the points from the Slovenian mountain trail, so you can take the opportunity to confirm your visit with stamp.
There are several trails to the top, but more or less all of them lead you through woods. Somewhere at the half of the hike, you get to the open field or pasture, where you are rewarded with a beautiful view on Maribor in the distance and Pohorje hill right in front of us. The top of Tojzlov vrh is hidden among trees.
One of particularly popular viewing point near Maribor with a church on top is definitely Sv. Urban nad Mariborom. You can drive to the top with a car as well, but this way you are a bit deprived of a nice hike. Nevertheless, the top is a perfect spot for relaxation and view. If you are there in the late afternoon or evening of a clear day, you can enjoy the evening colours of the sunset.
Not far from Maribor and right by the border with Austria, there is a tower Plački stolp on a low hill. From the top, you can admire vast vineyards, turn towards Pohorje hill or the neighbour country and on each side look for hills that are marked on the boards.
HINT: You can complement your trip with a visit at one of the local wine cellar or the heart road among vineyards, and taste some local wine.
The locals love to take the path through the woods up to the hut Dom na Pečkah. You can sit there on the benches outside and relax for a while. Some of them even like to count their hikes. It is especially popular destination on weekends. The marked trail you can start in Limbuš, from the hut you can continue the hike up to the Pohorje hill.
In Radvanje in Maribor, there is the start of the Slovenian Mountain Trail with its checkpoint and sign-in book. Here you can put your first stamp in your mountain diary or book and start exploring the beauty of Slovenian mountains. Some particularly experienced hikers and mountaineers decide to accomplish the whole Mountain Trail at once. Usually they start in Maribor in Summer time and finish at seaside in Ankaran.
HINT: It is nice to step in nature and enjoy its beauty and intactness, however, it is recommendable to choose the routes according to our fitness, our abilities, and equip adequately. This was you can really enjoy visiting the mountains. Also, try to leave them as we found them, keep our nature clean and genuine. It is our great treasure.
You can start the route in Radvanje under Pohorje, or you shorten it by taking the cable car, and start the trail at the upper station and follow the signs towards the hut Mariborska koča.
You can continue to the hut Ruška Koča on Areh or you can get there directly from the upper cable car station. This path is not marked as well, but still very popular.
The paths on Pohorje lead you mostly through the woods with green brushwood and some brooks with characteristic red-brown coloured stones. The nature there caresses your senses and fills you up with the energy that we spent on the hike. The paths are very pleasant and they serve you some amazing views and natural sights of Pohorje.
On the side of the main road from Hoče to Areh, there you can stop for a while to descend to the Waterfall Skalca ot Fram Waterfall. You can look up close, if you step on the wooden bridge underneath. The water drops bring the perfect refreshment in hot summer days.
If you follow the macadam road from Areh, it takes you to the starting point of the path towards the Waterfall Šumik. The end part of the path through the woods to the waterfall is a bit demanding, and it leads on some pegs with a steel rope for assistance. When you win this part, you are rewarded with a view on the magnificent waterfall Šumik. You have a chance to refresh and take a short break before the return.
The same macadam road can take you to the Hut Dom na Osankarici, where you can take a few-minute path towards the Black Lake.
The roads and paths on Pohorje can bring you all the way to the Hut Koča na Pesku and to Rogla (or vice versa). Rogla is a popular ski resort in winter and a popular destination in every season. In the past, you could climb the viewing tower that brought us above the woods. Nowadays, many tourists visit Rogla for the Path above the treetops, that is very easily accessed; you can come to the top on the ascending wooden path without any stairs. This way every visitor has the opportunity to enjoy the view.
Hikers can come from Rogla on the marked path to the Lovrenc Lakes, which are a great sightseeing point in all the seasons with its wooden paths among low bushes and ponds.
The route to Ribniška koča you can start in the town Ribnica na Pohorju and follow the signs, or you can drive with your car on the macadam road to the hut and walk around there. The beautiful views from the surrounding fields you can enjoy in every season.
